 Subject: 1/2 of nail detached

I crushed my thumbnail and it started to hurt and bleed. It seems as if the top half of my nail has become detached from the nail bed, but the bottom half is still attached fine. And the whole nail is in one piece. What do I do? It hurts of course, but will it just heal itself? Or do I have to get the nail removed? Or what? Right now it's just wrapped in a band aid...

sounds like the top half is definitely seperated to me. the part that has detached will not reattach. you've got two choices. you can go have the part that has seperated removed or keep it bandaged for 3-4 months with hopes that either way it will grow on out. the only problem i can see,is, if you damaged the matrix-the living tissue under the hard nail-which sometimes happens when it's crushed-then a new nail may not grow. time will tell in that regard. you just don't want to "catch" the detached part and rip the rest up-not to mention the pain of doing that.
