 Subject: new nails growing over old ones

My daughter has a fingernail on her thumb growing over her existing fingernail. Has anyone ever heard of this? She says it is painful. but I don't know how long she has had it because she is a nail biter and I usually never have to clip her nails.
If anyone has ever heard of this please let me know.

if she's a bitter then her nail bed probably thought the nail was gone. she may have damaged the root of the nail, and "fooled" it into growing another. i really can't imagine what other reason's their might be. anybody?
