Subject: How to get my nail off
Message: Hi...about a week and a half ago I got hit with a softball in the thumbnail and then I slammed it into a light switch so the nail is now away from the nail bed. I had acrylic nails and have removed them from all of my fingers. It's almost off the thumbnail. But here's my question...how do I clip the nail that has come away from the nail bed? I am using fingernail clippers to clip away the top of then nail but not sure what to use to clip the rest of the way down the nail as I know I need to get rid of the nail itself. Or will it just eventually fall off on it's own. It's not really hanging there because it's still connected below my cuticle. Help!!!

Message: Michelle,
without really seeing the nail that's still attached,it's hard to say. it will not fall off on it's own though. the part that is still attached is still receiving blood. a doctor would probably go ahead and remove the entire nail so a new one could start growing. i'm not telling you to remove your nail though. the risk of infection is too great. have a doctor look at it, or a nurse, and let them decide.

Message: Well that's what I'm trying to avoid. Going to the doctor anyway. It's not painful just annoying when the nail has pressure pulling it away from the nail bed. It's not sore anymore either and there is not a bruise at all. I'm a big baby when it comes to the doctor especially when it's not very painful.

Message: i understand. i don't really like going either. you would probably grow a new, healthy nail if the injured one was removed though. just remember, you always have the final yes or no in the doctors office when it comes to any decisions. no one's forcing you to ever do anything. just be careful and don't jam or rip the nail that's left. you could really do a lot of damage to the matrix underneath.

Message: True to all of these replies. The nail has done it's job in protecting your finger (What, you think it's there so you can paint it?! lol ;) )
Go and see your doctor if you are unsure. In the meantime, to avoid any lifting, keep a bandage around the nail.
Theoretically, the nail will grow back and shed the damaged one as it grows up. It will take a while though, expect roughly about 6 - 8 months. Good luck with it. :)
