Message: heather,
they will grow, i promise. i bit mine for 35 years, they too looked horrible, and i have nails now after a lot of patience and care. nails are very forgiving. you've just got to want to stop, and you have, and find something else to replace the habit. that's all it is- a bad habit that can be stopped. go to the drug store, buy some cuticle oil ,and everytime you feel the urge or are bored, rub some in to the whole nail. really massage it in. they really need a couple of weeks to realize they're not being bitten and abused to start healing. patience is a hard thing, i know, but if i can do it i know you can too. there is no overnight miracle, because it took a while for them to get that way and it takes a while to reclaim them. it's worth it.

Message: Well said Cheryl!
Yeah, just really look after your nails. You can buy all the lotions, potions and fire you want but in the end it all comes down to you not putting your nails in your mouth. Good luck!
Mary......who hasn't posted in a while and can see that "Mary " is a taken alias...so will adopt the name "Gypsy" to avoid confusion. Cheers folks!

Message:
I have read lot of posts on how to stop nail biting. I too used to be a bad nail biter.
Allow me to explain using another analogy: New Years Resolutions.
Most New Years Resolutions are based on negativeness i.e: "I'm going to lose weight this year" or "I'm going to quit smoking this year". Like nail biting, giving these things up often means you have to be depriving yourself of something. How are you going to be successful if you just keep depriving yourself with negative ways? By finding out the good points.
When I stopped biting my nails I thought about the good things that could come out of it, like how healthy and good looking my nails would be, and how people would compliment on my nails. And when that thinking took hold, I simply stopped doing it. I didn't need any bad tasting lotions or feel the need to put correction fluid on my nails.
When I started thinking positively, it was a LOT easier.
Here's a tip for a nail biter: Reward yourself. When you feel you have suceeded, buy yourself a pretty ring or go for a deluxe manicure.
I hope I have helped some people,
Mary

Message: i've been biting all my life. now each nail is damaged. When i let them grow they grow crooked, non-uiform and brittle.
so here's my question. i will stop biting. (i'll take up licorice root or worry beads or something to replace it). but i'd like to take the old nails off, before starting a anew. what do you think? is there a way to get the old one's off, make sure the nail bed and cuticles are clean and smooth, then let them grow anew??

Message: howard,
no. please don't do that. i'm saying it as nice as i can because i can't scream it. you stand to get an infection and god knows worse by doing that. our nails are hard for a reason-to protect the living tissue beneath them. you take that away and you've removed the barrier for everything bad. there is a root there that needs to be protected by however little nail is there. you say your nails are brittle, then moisturize them and you might see miracles. you've just got to give them a chance to heal-and i don't mean days-i mean months. it took a long time to get them in that shape and it takes a while to get them back. either use vitamin e oil or get some growth formula from this web site and use it twice a day or more. eventually you will be able to buff out the un-eveness, ridges and if you give them the moisture they need, the brittleness will be gone too. what your asking to do is just mutilating yourself even more. i don't pull punches when it comes to answering these questions. i know what it takes to get your nails back.

Message: Am I missing something here Howard....I did not even know that you could "elect" a surgery to remove otherwise healthy nails. That does not even make a bit of sense for me. But to each his own I guess. Why not START with the options that are less damaging and stand a better chance for accomplishment. What's to say your nails wont grow in even more "deformed" for lack of a better word, and no offence meant here....Just weigh the options out before even considering such a drastic move.
Best regards,
Barbara

Message: sorry, no overnight-miracle cures. i guess you could go look in your kitchen cabinets for oil, if you really want to put cooking oil on your nails. not something i would do. there's nothing, already at home, that i know of, that can spare you a trip to the store for some decent lotion or cuticle oil. just decide to stop, let them heal, grow, eat healthy, take your vitamins and be nice to your nails.

Message: not applied IP: 80.46.109.158,
Have you taken the time to read some of the valuable information on the forum? There are plenty of ideas and solutions.
First, make up your mind not to bite today
Replace the bad biting habit with a healthy replacement habit.
Will power is not enough on its own. Help yourself by making the conscious decision not to bite and get a habit that benefits the nails rather than destroys them.
And look for answers for yourself, if it is worth your attempts to quit, it is worth the time it takes to find the answers that work for you.
