Subject: Thumb go smashed by softball

Message:
Two days ago my thumbnail got hit right on the top. I am wearing acrylic nails so it looked on the surface that it cracked. But it did start bleeding profusely and has been extremely sore and I can't do much with my right hand. Today I bumped it by accident on the light switch and most of the nail has come away from the nail bed but did not fall off, I can just see it from the top that my real nail is no longer attached to the nail bed. It looks like it came away only half way down but the nail and the acrylic is still attached. Should I just keep it dry and hope it heels itself or should I get half of the nail and acrylic removed. It's very painful to touch and I can't even cut it down as its on my right hand. Could my nail actually reattach itself to the nail bed?

Michelle,
no, your nail will not reattach itself. do keep it dry and as soon as you can,you need to figure out a way to make the injured part shorter. that part needs to come off before any new nail can grow, if your lucky, and the matrix wasn't injured. once you're able to shorten the injured part you need to soak off the acrylic with acetone and then you're going to have to hope your nail bed grows another nail. that thumb is not going to be able to heal properly if you put another acrylic nail on top.

Thanks so much...I am just really concerned with the nail bed being exposed to air. The matrix doesn't look injured as mostly it affects the top half of my nail and is extremely painful. I've been trying to clip away the extra acrylic at the top and it pretty much hurts and I'm not getting far. The good thing is that it was time to get my nails balanced so there is alittle growth at the bottom of nail near the cuticle. I just don't want to have to get the nail removed. I tried acetone but because it just separated today it was burning like crazy because of the open wound. So trimming the excess at the top of acrylic and my real nail and keeping it dry should do the trick then??? Should I put any neosporin or fungus stuff on it at all so it doesn't get infected? This stinks. But I will be removing all the other acrylic nails this weekend.

Michelle,
hopefully you won't have to have your own nail removed. kind of hard to tell without seeing it though. i raked my thumb nail down a wall taking off a shirt 2 years ago when i was still doing the acrylic merry-go-round and lifted the acrylic and my own thumb nail right off the nail bed too. you really need to remove what's left of the acrylic from that nail and yes it's going to hurt-just no way around it-i know. don't let it completely dry out. put some neosporin cream and wrap a band-aid, not tightly, around it-especially at night. fungus isn't a problem because you're giving it air by it seperating! please consider giving the acrylics a rest and giving your own nails a chance. i did acrylics for 5 years and after many accidents, loss of nails and infections and fungus i finally gave them up and it's one of the best things i ever did.

Yeah the acrylics are coming off. But any idea how to get the acrylic off the injured thumb? I tried Acetone nail polish remover and because now it's an open sore it was like throwing paint thinner down my throat. Now that was painful. Any other suggestions? I am going to try and chip away at the acrylic that's down towards the bottom that needed to be fixed anyway.

good, smart decision. there is no other way to remove the acrylic. i think i remember waiting a few days before i soaked it. it felt so much better after i finally did remove it. just be careful chipping away at it though. your nails are thin enough without adding insult to injury(no pun intended)!

Michelle,
something i forgot to tell you before. i soaked my thumb in warm water and epsom salt and it helped draw out the drainage-if you have any-and helped with the swelling. just made it feel better.

Oh plenty of drainage here...kind of gross, but I will try the epsom salt tomorrow, tonight it's wrapped in a band aid with neosporin. Now I am just wrapping around the finger to give it some pressue and not enclosing the tip the of the nail. Is that correct?

yeah, that's fine for now. it will feel SO much better when the acrylic and the detached part is removed. just be careful and don't whack the tip on anything.

New nail growth

Message:

Hi

I just wanted to tell the ladies out there that I wore acrylic nails for 3 months. My nails were in poor shape before I attached my tips but thanks to the tips, my nails have grown quite well with lovely oval tips. I am now going to try and maintain my own nails, although I loved the acrylic nails. I wore some beautiful patterns which would not have been possible if I had my own nails.
