Subject: Blood under nail

Message:
Hello,

About three weeks ago I dropped a sewing machine on the pinky finger of my left hand. I had nail polish on at the time so I did not see the blood underneath. It hurt like heck. The next morning, however, I took off the polish and discovered the ugly sight. I looked up what I should do on the net: poke a hole in the nail. I did this and blood did come out. I just came back from a trip this morning and while I was re-packing last night, my nail hit one of the shoes (that I was packing) hard. It wasn't until a few moments later I relized that the nail was lifting up. The blood (blue in color still) was stuck to the bottom of the nail. It seems like my nail wants to come off but I haven't messed with it since last night. If it does come off, how long, usually, does it take for it to grow back? What should I do in the mean time?

Meg

If it is not off yet, I think you should bandage it up so there is not even a remote chance of doing more damage. If it falls off, there is the a strong possibility that it will grow back as long as the matrix is not severely damaged. Keep it clean with the use of hydrogen peroxide. If you have any Neosporin Plus, put a bit of that on before you bandage it up again. It will help fight infection and also help to add a soft layer between the nail and the bandage.
Just be vigilant about protecting that finger....

if your nail does eventually come off then it will take anywhere from 3-4 months to grow a new one. everyone's different.

timothy,
just the fact that it still hurts, after 4 weeks, is enough of a reason to see the doctor. let him or her decide what the next step should be.
