 Subject: Is Acetone Safe???

I remember hearing in my freshman biology course that acetone can be poisonous (even in nail polish remover). Is this true? And before anyone posts that it is NOT, please take a look at the following websites and THEN reply. Thanks.

ok, went and checked out both sites-as instructed. common sense has to come into play here and tell you that you don't want to use acetone remover in an enclosed area,i.e. a closet, a small un-vented bathroom, a cardboard box, or hold a towel over your head while removing them. don't ingest it, inject it, or use it as a suppository. it is used everyday in beauty shops, nail salons, my basement as a remover of gooey, sticky stuff from fingers, a paint remover, and many other ways i'm sure i haven't even thought of. what it boils down to is, it is the ONLY thing that will take off acrylic nails. what was used on your bare nail beds before they were applied-acid, to dehydrate and prime the nails, and then the monomer and acrylic powder mixed together to form the acrylic ball, are thousands of times more toxic than any polish remover will ever be. soak your acrylics in it, remove them, and then don't do it again. stay away from chemicals in the first place and you won't have to use them in any shape or form.

Cheryl is exactly right....What they did to your nails to adhere the fake nail is indeed more toxic and has much more poison to get into the blood stream than a day of effort to rid yourself of them... Why do you think those people wear masks? There really is a rule of thumb to apply to life in general and that is "ALL THINGS IN MODERATION"
You can do anything to excess and abuse. MODERATION,
remember it, it will serve you well!

before i replied to your post i did exactly what you told me to do and went to the web sites and
read each one carefully as i'm sure you did. I came to the conclusion that if we do anything to the extreme, whether it's taking a whole bottle of aspirin for a headache or being terrified of a bottle of polish remover to remove acrylics, that this entire nation has seemingly lost the ability to reason and think for themselves. you see it as condescending, i see it as an answer to what should have been common sense in the first place.

I thought the response came across kind of snotty too. The fact that you said things like using acetone in a "cardboard box or hold a towel over your heard while removing them" seemed to me like you were trying to make her look dumb. As a professional and the one with the knowledge and expertise, you shouldn't have to belittle others to get your point across.

Sometimes when words are "written on flat paper" much the way we are using our computers these days, they don't reflect the spirit of the meaning. I too am guilty of putting things down on "paper" and then reading them back and they sound harsh or insulting..and I did not mean them to read that way.
We are unable to give the inflection of the words this way, so occasionally, they read back as bitter or hurtful. I really don't think anyone here is trying to be either. So please, do not take personal offense at the reading of some of the information as be such.
Much thanks to all for the information and for posing interesting questions here. That is exactly what this forum is designed to do. Share the insights and knowledge so that we may all benefit from one another, all of the experiences and mishaps too!

getting people to actually reason and think for themselves was my only goal, not to make any one look dumb. a lot of the information found on the internet does nothing but terrify normal, reasoning people into believing that everything we do is going to be toxic to us, when it's not. i'm done with this subject now. i know the kind of person my mother raised. i'm neither snotty or belittling. if you knew me beyond the confines of a keyboard you would know that too, but you don't.
